What is the role of a trial separation?

When a relationship or marriage feels like it is failing and there is a should I stay or should I go mindset creeping in, a trial separation provides a couple with the chance to embark on a temporary split, without taking the huge decision to divorce.

In this case, a trial separation can provide a new perspective on the relationship and the space to explore what you really want.

To be valuable, both parties should be committed to reflecting on the issues within the relationship, be able to trust each other and be able to communicate both clearly and amicably.

An opportunity to reflect on the challenges of the relationship, a trial separation need not mean the beginning of the end. It can be the start of a renewed commitment in moving forward together and overcoming any current and future issues as a couple.

Establishing the rules

For a trial separation to stand the best chance of success, it is essential that several ground rules are established beforehand. These include:

  • How long the separation is to be
  • Whether you will live together or apart
  • How you will manage your shared finances while separated
  • How to minimise the impact on your children
  • How your children will divide their time between you
  • How often during the separation you will communicate with each other
  • Any boundaries around dating other people and/or intimacy with a third party

The potential benefits

Time out from the relationship can provide greater clarity on why it is no longer working. It provides the opportunity for change for either working things out together or living a life without each other.

The potential drawbacks

Unfortunately, it might be that you both reach different conclusions, with one party keen to work on and save the relationship and the other to split permanently. It can also be difficult for children, wider family members and friends to handle the idea of a trial separation with no certainty as to what the future may bring.
